PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Kalo Pascha.

"Hi, how are you, haven't seen you in awhile!". One debate often heard in AHEPA gatherings involves ways to increase our membership. The two recurring suggestions I keep hearing are "keep the meetings short and on track", and "have fun and interesting social events". Who would disagree with these suggestions? Some brothers who have worked hard to organize events would say we do many of these things now but we still struggle to get more than a small percentage of members attending the monthly meetings or the various events our chapter sponsors!

In my experience, this is the prime challenge to AHEPA and other social/ volunteer organizations. An organization must reach out and inspire its members. These members are people with various interests and so many other activities competing for their time. The key to any successful function starts with a spirited chairperson, a champion to lead the way. We try to sponsor events that educate us about Hellenism, AHEPA's primary mission, as well as specific social functions, in order to draw members. Our chapter membership is fortunate to possess dynamic members with ideas and enthusiasm.

This year's Greek Independence Day celebration was judged by many to be the best ever. The entire format and venue seemed to appeal to everyone that attended. Several people, including many born and raised in Greece, said they learned aspects of that period they had never been taught in school. Others familiar with history appreciated the dramatic presentation and colorful reminder of those events passed. It truly exemplified the "E" for "Education" in our name.

Many people participated to make this an overwhelming success by contributing their time, creativity and finances; inside this issue you will find a more detailed "thank you" letter. I would like to recognize three people here, in particular, who led the way in key areas: Mike Merica for writing and directing the play, Mytrali Anagnostopoulos for teaching and directing the poetry recitals, and George Pappas for organizing the luncheon and staging requirements.

Membership opportunities often increase during and after successful events such as the March 25th celebration and Golf Tournament. We are currently in a membership drive and plan to have an initiation in June. This month's Ta Nea includes a membership application for new or transfer members. Please make a copy or two and actively seek out new members to join our chapter. I am also seeking brothers who would like to take part in the initiation ceremony. We plan to improve the initiation ceremony, within the confines of the constitution, and make it more interesting and memorable for the candidates.

The Golf Tournament committee had its first meeting and is looking for golfers to join the planning team. This event has been our chapter's single greatest fundraisor! I encourage you to help out and come to play golf!

See you at the meeting.

Art Pathe

Greek Independence Day

Highlights

I would like to avail myself of the forum kindly and graciously provided by our Chapter to express my feelings of gratitude and admiration for the entire cast and all those who were a part of our effort today, which made "Freedom's Spark" a reality.

Seldom, if ever, does a novice playwright see his work come so graciously alive from dead script and seldom if ever does ever get the opportunity to

act in it himself.

For this singular and great honor I shall be eternally grateful to the following people:

Art and Hillary Pathe, Stella Mellos, Steven Stubberud, Costa Brown, Jim Rigopoulos, Tony Petroulias, Jim Kanterakis, John Grevas, Evan Vassilakis and my own Athena Merica. Also, Gary Kaprielian, John Vassilakis, Steve Williams and Ted Borgeas.

I would also like to single out the following people who, like the Rock of Gibraltar provided the vital structural and logistical elements of our effort:

The brilliantly talented John Koufoudakis and of course George Pappas. Also a great big thank you to Jim Caldes for his great make-up skills.

I am privileged and deeply touched by the support, love and dedication of all of the above people as well as all of the audience today whose rivetted attention mirrored the wonder they too, felt. A wise Greek once said "friendship is gold...True friendship is priceless." I am truly a very wealthy man! Respectfully,

Mike Merica

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Sisters,

Kalo Pascha.

The next meeting will be held in the Saint Constantine and Helen community hall on Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at 7:00 pm. Please make an effort to attend.

Our meeting attendance has dropped over the last few months. At the last meeting we did not even have a quorum so we could not discuss any business. Your ideas and participation are what make this an active chapter. Please call one other member to remind them about the meeting and then come together!

Hope to see many of you next month!
