membership of every organization is made of four kinds of bones.
It has been said the membership of every organization is made of four kinds of bones. There are the WISH BONES, who spend all their time wishing someone else would do the work; the JAW BONES, who do all the talking but very little else; the KNUCKLE BONES, who knock everything everyone else tries to do. Finally, there are the BACK BONES, who get under the load and do the work.

City of Los Angeles Marathon, Sunday, March 21, 2010:
City of Los Angeles Marathon, Sunday, March 21, 2010: As some of you may know, the year 2010 marks the 2,500th anniversary of the victory of a predominantly Athenian army of approximately 10,000 soldiers against an invading army comprising approximately 100,000 Persian soldiers at the Battle of Marathon. Legend has it that after the battle, the Athenian Pheidippides (or in some accounts, Philippides) ran from Marathon to Athens to announce the Greek victory with the word "Nenikēkamen!" (Νενικήκαμεν (We were victorious!)), whereupon he promptly died of exhaustion. But for this victory (and many other subsequent Greek victories), the history of Europe, and indeed the entire world, would be vastly different. As Hellenes and Philhellenes, this historically significant victory by a vastly outnumbered Greek army deserves our respect and admiration and must be recognized in some manner. And I can think of no better and more fitting way than to participate in a marathon, specifically the City of Los Angeles Marathon, a world class event that will attract over 20,000 runners.
Now I know that very few of our members are capable of actually running a marathon. However, virtually every one of us is capable of working in some capacity as a volunteer, and the City of Los Angeles Marathon offers many, many volunteer opportunities. Accordingly, the District Lodge is issuing the following challenge: that a total of at least 50 AHEPANs, Daughters, Sons and/or Maids in District 20 volunteer as a group to work the City of Los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 21, 2010. I have taken the liberty of contacting the Volunteer Coordinator with the City of Los Angeles Marathon and they are thrilled with the prospect of members of the AHEPA District 20 Family volunteering to work their marathon. I have also taken the further liberty of establishing an AHEPA District 20 Volunteer Group where you can sign up to volunteer. To volunteer, please visit http://www.doitsports.com/volunteer/join-protected-group.tcl?event_id=221. The password to join our group is redwings. As of right now we have 3 group members. Please sign up as soon as possible to meet our goal of at least 50 volunteers!
District 20 workshops with National
District 20 Los Angeles Workshop, February 13, 2010: As you know, there will not be a 2010 District 20 Midwinter Conference because the Greek Weekend at Sea will occur during the weekend when the Midwinter Conference would normally be held. After much discussion, the District Lodge has decided to hold a series of travelling “workshops.” The workshops will include discussion of topics normally associated with the Midwinter Conference, but are also intended to be educational in nature and to convey information relevant to individual chapter operations. The workshops will be free of charge and will feature speakers who are knowledgeable about the topics being discussed.
The first workshop will be held in connection with the Supreme President’s visitation from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Encino Golf Course, 16821 Burbank Blvd., Encino, CA 91436. We anticipate that the Supreme President and Executive Director will participate for at least part of the workshop. Two additional workshops are also currently being planned, one for the San Diego area and the other for the Phoenix area. The dates, times and exact locations for these additional workshops will be determined in the near future. Brothers, I encourage all of you in the Los Angeles area to attend the Los Angeles workshop, but in particular, all Presidents, Treasurers and Secretaries of Los Angeles area chapters should attend to learn about new IRS reporting requirements with which all chapters must now comply. Additional information will be emailed and posted online regarding each workshop as it becomes available.

When churches fall completely out of use
What shall we turn them into?
—Philip Larkin, ‘Church Going’
Nicosia
Soon after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the roof of St. Andronikos church in Kythrea caved in and fell into its sanctuary. No one came by to clear the rubble, so there’s a heap of ruins on the ground covered with tangled greenery. From where I stand, on top of that heap, I can see that the walls, once known for their frescoes, have been stripped white and are now marked with black and neon graffiti. In some places there remain a few painted figures, including ones of Saints Peter and Paul, but their faces are chiseled out and their bodies have been pockmarked by bullets. Cars roll by every so often, but the one persistent sound is the hum of bees coming from a smashed clerestory window.
I came across this church off a road near the Agios Dimitrios crossing point on the Green Line, the boundary running through the island and keeping it cloven in two radically disparate parts: the Republic of Cyprus, and the upper third of the island Turkey seized in 1974. Turkey has since held that part under illegal military occupation, and turned it into a rogue breakaway “state” called the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), recognized by Turkey only.
Dilapidated churches like St. Andro-
nikos are a common sight here. As the journalist Michael Jansen observes, the north, full of 12,000 years of history at a key crossroads in the Mediterranean, now looks like a “cultural wasteland.”
During and soon after the invasion, museums in the north and private collections were plundered, artworks were burned in pyres, stolen, or illegally exported, 21 major archaeological sites were captured—including the ancient city kingdoms of Salamis, Soli, and Engomi—along with more than a hundred places that had been inspected or were being excavated, four castles, and over 500 churches, chapels, and monasteries, most of them dating to the Byzantine period (4th-15th centuries). From the interiors were removed several major icons, mosaics, frescoes, Bibles, wood carvings, reliquaries, silver and gold vessels, and more. Sixteen thousand icons alone are reported missing.
The Church of Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus have worked to repatriate, with some major successes, several of these works through local, foreign, and international courts. But the list of damaged items and places keeps growing. As the occupation continues, so does destruction—whether by intent or neglect, or lack of adequate funds.
Greek of the Week!-Who knew?
Greek of the Week!
Actress Betty White
Last week, six-time Emmy Winner Betty White received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. The former Golden Girl is the daughter of Tess Cachikis, a Greek American; and a German father.
According to a USA Today article, when announcing the award, president Alan Rosenberg said: "Betty White has entertained audiences with her impeccable comic timing and remarkable wit for more than 60 years. Her life-long devotion to the welfare of animals, manifest in her work as an author, producer and philanthropist, is further evidence of her tremendous humanity."
For demonstrated excellence in her profession and for her commitment to philanthropy, please join the AHEPA Family in proudly honoring Actress Betty White as this week's Greek of the Week!

AHEPA Condemns Continued Anti-Semitic Attacks
upon Synagogue in Hania, Crete
WASHINGTON - Nicholas A. Karacostas, supreme president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nation's three million American citizens of Greek heritage, and countless Philhellenes, issued the following statement regarding the continued anti-Semitic attacks upon the historic Etz-Hayyim Synagogue located in Hania, Crete:
"We strongly condemn the anti-Semitic attacks that have been carried out on the Etz-Hayyim Synagogue in Hania. This is the second arson attack in two weeks that has left the synagogue's infrastructure devastated and approximately 2,500 rare books and other archival items destroyed by fire.
"These anti-Semitic attacks upon the Jewish community in Greece are simply unacceptable. We appeal to the people of Hania, and all Greek citizens, to come together to defy these acts of hatred, intolerance, and bigotry; and to help the healing process begin.
"We call for the swift apprehension of the perpetrators of these heinous attacks so that they may be brought to justice."
Arsonists attacked Etz-Hayyim Synagogue on Tuesday, January 5 and Saturday, January 16, 2010.
Etz-Hayyim Synagogue is the only surviving Jewish monument on the island of Crete. To learn more about the history of the synagogue, please visit http://www.etz-hayyim-hania.org.

Airlift Supported by Orthodox
Christians Arrives in Haiti
January 18, 2010
As Orthodox Christians around the country gathered on Sunday to assemble hygiene kits and pray for the people of Haiti, their financial gifts were supporting the transfer of critically-needed supplies to Haitians. Over the weekend an airlift of water purification and sanitation equipment for 10,000 people and 500 family tents are expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince. The airlift was made possible by a partnership between ACT Alliance members International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) and Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and valued at more than $600,000. IOCC's contribution to the airlift was underwritten by an emergency grant from the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, a philanthropic organization of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and long-standing partner with IOCC.

One of the reasons Ahepa was formed
"NO NIGGERS OR GREEKS"
was from the Omaha Riots of 1912 where a Greek dared date the sheriffs daughter. All the Greeks were kicked out of Omaha. The sign is probably in the Immigrant art museum at Minneapolis lot of the AHEPA archives were given to them.

Please help us keep a cold-blooded killer behind bars.
JANUARY 20th DEADLINE
On May 19, 1985, in Santa Cruz California, a Greek Orthodox priest by the name of Father John Karastamatis was brutally beaten to death in his church.
The criminals responsible were Edward and Ann Bowman. When the police went to arrest Ann, she stood on the porch, pointed a gun at them, and proceeded to shoot at the officers. After almost killing one officer, they returned fire. Ann then killed herself.
Edward Bowman was eligible for the death penalty, but pled guilty to avoid execution. Bowman was sentenced to 25 years to life. Due to, now outdated, sentencing guidelines, he is now eligible for parole. His hearing is scheduled for February 8th, but your letter:
Must Be Received by January 20th. We need your help to keep him in prison where he belongs.
Things you should know. This brutal crime was pre-meditated. Detectives involved in this case believe these criminals were responsible for other crimes, and committed other murders. One theory is they told Father John, in counseling, of their crimes. They became nervous then planned his murder to ensure Father John remained silent. As he lay dying they rifled through Father John’s pockets, searched his office and stole items from the Church. The criminal’s son was in fear for his life as Edward Bowman, while bragging of the brutal murder, threatened to kill him as well if he said anything about the murder. Psychiatrists who examine Bowman agree, he has sociopath tendencies, is a pathological liar and to this day expresses no remorse.
I am sending a link to the District Attorney’s Office in Santa Cruz California. They are awaiting your e-mail, which will be printed out and brought before the parole board. I am typing up a letter you can cut and paste, or you can create your own. Your note must have Edward Bowman’s name and prisoner number on it. You can put just your first name on it, and can add you city or just your state. Phone numbers, addresses and other personal information are blacked out. Please then forward this to everyone in your address book. This will only take a couple of minutes and will have a direct effect on the board’s decision. Your voice matters!
Our e-mail is JusticeforFatherJohn@yahoo.com . To this day, our family, the Church Father John founded, friends and community members still suffer. Please help us make sure this monster continues to pay for his crime, and that everyone else can rest easier knowing one less predator is on the streets. Our family thanks you.

RE: Edward Bowman Prisoner #E00064
I am opposed to the possibility of a criminal such as Edward Bowman, being paroled. Bowman’s brutal crime was one against not only a Priest, but a devoted husband, father, grandfather(of 5 days) and brother. Bowman’s horrific act was one against not only Orthodox Christians, but those of any Faith, throughout the world. Bowman planned this crime, and to this day expresses no remorse.
Bowman’s crime destroyed a family, shocked a community and sickened experienced Detectives. His wife tried to kill police officers rendering justice and he considers her a martyr.
My friends and family deserve to be safe. To help keep us safe, criminals like Edward Bowman need to serve their maximum sentences, in his case, life behind bars.
Sincerely,
(YOUR NAME HERE)
