AHEPA Donates Christmas Gifts to St. Basil Academy Students

AHEPA Donates Christmas Gifts to St. Basil Academy Students

WASHINGTON (December 21, 2009)—Nicholas A. Karacostas, supreme president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nations three million American citizens of Greek heritage, and countless Philhellenes, attended St. Basil Academys annual Christmas luncheon on December 19, 2009 where he presented each student with a Christmas gift.

“For nearly 50 years the AHEPA family has been a proud supporter of St. Basil Academy,” said Karacostas. “These students are so special and work very hard to achieve their academic goals. The AHEPA family will always be committed to ensuring the mission of St. Basil Academy is met.”

Despite the inclement weather approximately 150 persons attended and were treated to a Christmas pageant staged by the Academy students. His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios spoke at the luncheon. Father Costas Sitaras, director, St. Basil Academy, and Evellyn Tsiadis, president, St. Basil Academy Board of Trustees, and a Daughters of Penelope past grand president, welcomed the guests. AHEPAs Chairman of St. Basil Academy Committee James Poll sent his Christmas greetings.

“We were treated to a wonderful program that captured the essence of the Christmas spirit,” added Karacostas. “It was a pleasure to spend the day with Archbishop Demetrios, the leadership of St. Basils, and of course, the students.”

In its history, AHEPA has donated more than $1.75 million to St. Basil Academy for the construction of dormitories and a school building. Also, the Daughters of Penelope has contributed to the furnishing of new buildings that have been built on campus and built a heated outdoor swimming pool for the children. Together, the AHEPA family provides for the ongoing maintenance and renovation of the facilities it helped to construct.

For more information about St. Basil Academy, please visit http://www.saintbasilacademy.org/, or how you can help the academy, visit http://www.saintbasilacademy.org/donate/wish_list.

AHEPA was established in 1922 by visionary Greek-Americans to protect all from bigotry and prejudice at the hands of the KKK. In its history, AHEPA has joined with the NAACP and Bnai Brith International to fight discrimination. It has grown to become the largest membership-based association for Hellenic-Americans and Philhellenes in the world.

A Message from the Supreme President

A Message from the Supreme President

Brothers, Sisters and Friends:

As we enter the final week of 2009 we can look back at this year with pride in our accomplishments. AHEPA maintains a strong presence in our communities, but as we enter a new decade we should ask ourselves "What has AHEPA been doing?"

This year we re-examined our programs and made adjustments to better accommodate our membership and meet the needs of the community. For example:

The Educational Foundation increased the minimum amount of each scholarship it awards to $2,000 and
The traditional Congressional Banquet has been transformed into four regional banquets in 2009 - 2010, allowing for greater participation from the community

Moreover, we continue to provide the same important service to the community with programs like:

National Housing for senior citizens, and
"United We Serve" campaign to feed the less fortunate.

Looking forward, we must strive to continue to meet our mission. We are truly blessed to have such a great organization with rich traditions and a dynamic cross-section of members. It all starts with us. Let's commit ourselves to growth, to challenging new programs, and to fulfill the vast potential of AHEPA the greatest organization it can be by working together-as One AHEPA.

Happy New Year to all.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Nicholas A. Karacostas, Supreme President

Ahepa Participation in SB Marathon Summary

Hello Brothers,

I am really glad to let you know that the First Santa Barbara International Marathon was a good success for our Chapter. It is great if you take in mind that we had a short time to work and prepare everything.

We worked all of us as a TEAM and that is the big benefit out of this event!I have attached some of the photos i received already

Firstly, I feel proud of our running team. All the 11 team runners (full marathon or relay teams) did great job, finished the race and nobody was injured!!!
These great guys are:
Carolyn Diacos
Alex Chuchas
Diana Georghiou
Kara Osborn
Mike Osborn
Sophia Kenrick
AJ Carralejo
Adam Carralejo
Alex Ioannidis
George Papazacharioudakis

And myself
I think that they worth our Chapter’s graceful sponsorship, since most of them have their school exams and they took their time off from studying to go and run. Most of the others are working, which makes training hard too…

Secondly, our booth, both days, Saturday at the EXPO and Sunday at the finish line was a hit!!! We had more than 3000 people walking by and most of them were interested in listening to our brothers explaining the Marathon’s Greek Heritage (only a few knew about).

I want to thank especially:

a. Costas Davlantes and Greg Pentages for setting up the booth on Friday at the EXPO.

b. Costas Davlantes and Bill Poulos for doing most of the work at the booths on Saturday from early morning until late afternoon and on Sunday the whole day.

c. Bill Tragos, Alex Haimanis and our St Barbara’s YAL member Stephanie Brown for spending their Saturday afternoon at the EXPO, helping at the booth.

d. George Papazacharioudakis for doing all the printing job needed. He printed hundreds of paper that saved AHEPA a few dollars. George spent much time at the booth on Saturday, although we was busy and picked up the t-shirts on Friday from the printing company.

Thanks to Vasilis Inempolidis we have some good photos of our runners finishing the race. Vasilis was also yesterday at 6am at the starting line, trying to take the first photos of the day and on Saturday at the EXPO too.

I want to thank James Stathis for designing our fliers and creating the 1 minute video about Marathon’s history that attracted everybody visited our booth on Saturday. He also promoted this event to his business mailing list spreading the word around. Great job for so late notice

Thanks to Costa Frango, our participation was promoted to the local press and TV. John Palminteri on Sunday at the finish line had some words to tell about AHEPA Running team.

Alex Chuchas did all the work regarding the runners participation. He did all the registration process online (a really time consuming task) and coordinated the relay teams. Thanks Alex!!!

I want to tell a few words about Bill Tragos. He threw the idea on the August meeting and motivated everyone to work. He did all the job with the race directors to get the booths and introduced generally AHEPA as a honorable group among the others! He hosted the last meeting at his house and also donated the pasta dinner for the runners on Saturday. Bill, you inspired everybody to start discussing about the E…

And of course I want to THANK ALL OF YOU for adopting the idea, gracefully sponsoring the runners, taking the money out of the chapter’s account and for buying most of the t-shirts to promote the idea. I want, personally, to thank you all for motivating me to start training for the marathon just a few months ago and do something that I had never even dreamed about!!!

Sorry if I missed somebody, but I feel really tired after running the full thing today.

I ‘ll be flying to Greece on Tuesday for the Christmas holidays, happy about this event but more happy about living within a so great Greek community 5000 miles away from my family. That will make my parents feel more comfortable…

Thanks for everything and have blessed Christmas holidays

Panos

P.S. If i forget some of our members, Jim and Alex please forward this e-mail

1st Annual Santa Barbara International Marathon Chapter #243

-----Press Release-----
The Course
Ancient Greece (490BC) to Modern Santa Barbara (2009)
2499 years of Marathon Tradition

This Sunday Dec 6th, 2009, the First Santa Barbara International Marathon is the big event. More than three thousand (3000) runners are expected to participate in this race. Running along a striking backdrop of the mountains and sea, this race is just like the original Marathon course 2,499 years ago in Ancient Greece.

The Marathon stands out because it was born by an actual historic and heroic event. The Marathon was a feat accomplished by a news-bearing foot soldier from ancient Athens, by the name of Pheidippides, who announced - with his last breath, “VICTORY” - the victory of the Greeks against the Persians in the battle of Marathon 490BC.

The 26.2 mile Marathon Race became one of the most competitive events when the Olympic Games were revived in 1896. A Greek athlete by the name of Spyros Louis, running what has since been referred to as the 'Original Course' from the ancient city of Marathon to Athens, won the gold medal that year and became a legend of Greek and international athletics.

Twelve (12) young Greek-Americans, will participate in the First Santa Barbara International Marathon, are sponsored by the local Santa Barbara AHEPA chapter. The AHEPA team runners will be easily distinguished by wearing white and navy colored T-shirts with the AHEPA logo on the front and map of the world, highlighting the Marathon’s route from Greece to California on the back.

American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) is Americas largest Greek heritage organization that promotes Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy and Civic Responsibility, while also supporting charities, causes, and local communities.

This year the Santa Barbara AHEPA chapter will have a booth at the Marathon ’s EXPO on Saturday Dec 5t h from 9am to 6pm at the Santa Barbara City College Sports Pavillion and on Sunday Dec 6th at the marathon’s finish line (Santa Barbara City College La Playa Stadium - track area), highlighting the Marathon’s Greek Heritage and the values of Olympic ideals to our community, such the need for world peace, the power of human mind, will and adopting sports as an a way of living and thinking.

If you plan to go to these places walk by the AHEPA booth and let the Greeks inform you about the race that attracts the interest of runners all over the world. They know better….
