Remembering our “Mission Statement” (above), this chapter embarks on a new chapter year-planning our activities of philanthropy and service with a focus on our young adults whom we believe need to be aware of their Hellenic ideals which will draw them closer to us. Our current environment is changing (good or bad) and we are considering change in how our chapter approaches the challenges before us. We are narrowing our focus on our youth, and on our fund-raisers which have social and identity benefits for everyone. We will reach out in our community at large for talent and special interests and utilize these gifts for the greater good. We have many events planned and we ask for your support in these endeavors.
We offer congratulations to the recent recipients of the District 20 Scholarship awards from Ahepa/Daughter’s of Penelope-Alexis Keramaris, Elenni Pantages, and Louis Arger.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE AND THE MINUTES OF MAY 18, 2009
It is with humble appreciation that I thank the chapter for another opportunity to be of service as President of this very special Ahepa chapter of Santa Barbara. We are a group of very talented, optimistic, goal orientated men providing service to our community. This is accomplished as a team utilizing our various talents to achieve common, specific goals that we put before us. Our officers have met in the first of a series of meetings to plan our year’s work, set goals, and discuss a plan to successfully achieve our goals. This will be our main topic at our meeting on the 15th. All of us are indeed blessed to enjoy the company of men of common background and purpose.
As the world around us seems to be changing so must we. I encourage all of you to “Think out of the box and to think Big” Consider our meetings, our events, including different venue sites, and in offering our members and even men outside of our organization opportunities to take an active role in participation. We have members with skills and talents that can stretch if asked to do so. Further this will ensure the viability of our chapter in the future and also provide a model to build on. Let us be fearless in this endeavor.
We must congratulate Jim Ager for completion of two successful years as President of this chapter. The chapter is well and secure and in a prominent position in the Santa Barbara community. We must also congratulate our Vice-President Alex Chuchas for the very successful YAL event of the 6th which raised funds to aid those adversely affected by the recent fire. The involvement of our young adults is vital to our future community.
LET’S LOOK FORWORD TO A SUCCESSFUL FUN-FILLED YEAR.

Supreme President Announces Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
Dear Brothers, Sisters, and friends of the AHEPA Family:
Life Member Alec Gulas, father of Supreme President Ike Gulas received one of two AHEPA Lifetime Achievement Awards. The award to Gulas was to be presented at the 87th Grand Banquet held July 3, 2009 at the annual AHEPA Supreme Convention in San Francisco. Alec, a lifelong member of Chapter No. 3, Birmingham, Ala., will not be attending the Supreme Convention, so the award was conveyed to him at the District #1 District Convention on June 6, 2009.
Supreme President Gulas stated, " ... members like my father preserved AHEPA for my generation to and that of my son." The supreme president made the announcement at a banquet where Alec was present and visibly touched as the crowd honored him with a standing ovation.
The AHEPA Lifetime Achievement Award was created to honor a special brother, who the supreme president believes embodies a lifetime of service to AHEPA. Alec is the 11th individual to ever receive the honor.
"Many members work all their lives for AHEPA, and often are never recognized for their sacrifices and commitments," said Gulas. "My father is one of those members who for years would close his eating establishment to host the chapter meeting. AHEPA has thousands of unsung heroes like my dad."
The second of the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients will be announced and awarded at the 87th Grand Banquet.

Meaning of Flag Draped Coffin-our flag
Meaning of Flag Draped Coffin
All Americans should be given this lesson. Those who think that America is an arrogant nation should really reconsider that thought. Our founding fa thers used GOD's word and teachings to establish our Great Nation and I think it's high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation's history. Pass it along and be proud of the country we live in and even more proud of those who serve to protect our 'GOD GIVEN' rights and freedoms.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you take the time to read this ... To understand what the flag draped coffin really means ..... Here is how to understand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows and widowers.
Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776?
Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!
The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.
The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.
The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.
The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance.
The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, 'Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.'
The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that They pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States Of America , and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.
The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.
The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born.
The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, theGod of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their nations motto, 'In God We Trust.'
After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today.
There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.
Share this with the children you love and all others who love what is referred to, the symbol of ' Liberty and Freedom.'
