AHEPA DISTRICT
GOVERNOR'S
MESSAGE
CRISTOS ANESTI!! CHRIST IS RISEN!!!
It is hoped that all my Brothers are
not ready to tar and feather me for
not having this edition of the El
Camino Real out before now.
Especially since I have kept telling
everyone that, "It will be out this
week," for so long now.
But, what held us up was that as
most of you might already know by
now:
WE (AHEPA) HAVE BEEN OFFICIALLY INVITED TO ENTER A FLOAT IN THE 1999 ROSE PARADE!!!
This was not any easy task to
accom- plish and many countless
hours and efforts were required in
order to ac- complish this major
effort.
We have come a very very long way
in such a short time period. The
AHEPA District 20 Brothers should
all be very proud of this
achievement. Our Hellenic Heritage
will be prominently displayed for all
the world to admire.
When Friday Morning January 1,
1999 comes around, the entire
Ahepa Family and the Hellenic
Communities throughout the United
States and around the World will
view with great pride and
appreciation the accomp- lishment of
District 20 AHEPA Family.
The time is NOW when we must all
really pull even closer together than
ever before, and make this float
project the most successful Ahepa
Family project yet.
Anyhow, getting back to my original
thought, we decided to "hold the
presses" in order that we might
include as much information as
possible in this issue concerning the
float, the up-coming District Conv-
ention in Tucson and the farewell
reception to honor the Consul
General of Greece, Mr. Christos
Panagopoulos for his many years of
service to the Los Angeles and the
SouthWestern region of the USA his
office covers. (See related article).
Finally, it appears that this will be the last issue before our District 20 Conv- ention in Tucson this June and the final issue for Editor, George N. Dussias, from Arizona Chapter 275, who is moving to Greece. We all wish Brother George well and Thank him for taking on the task of the El Camino Real for the past year. Kalo Taxidi!! Again I apologize for the delay in
getting this El Camino real issue out
so late. I look forward to seeing
everyone in Tucson and I hope we
all start working towards the major
fundraising task for the float. We
need your support: moral, physical,
spiritual, financial and most of all
your participation.
Sincerely and Fraternally, Nicholas J. Perdaris Nicholas J. Perdaris District 20 Governor

part of the integrated Hellenic
American Community of St.
Demetrios, AHEPA has once
again supported the St. Demetrios
Greek School with the celebration
of Greek Independence Day on
Sunday March 29. There was a
luncheon in the Community
Room after Divine Liturgy which
was then followed by various
Greek poems and songs
performed by the children of the
Greek School. The days festivities
were augmented with a special
appearance by the St. Demetrios
Youth Greek Dance Groups who
performed numerous Greek
Dances. Proceeds from the event

Hesperia Chapter 152, Los Angeles Looks to building an AHEPA Retirement Home in Southern California. Peter Koustas, President of
Hesperia 152, pointed out that
AHEPA Homes have been
successfully built in the Eastern
and Southern part of the U.S. and
serve the retired members of the
fraternity. He added, " We seek to
locate an AHEPA Home in a
smog-free community, away from
the hustle and bustle of the big
city, yet near to shopping center
conveniences, recreational
activities, (golf, tennis,etc) and
also close to an Eastern Orthodox
Church community."
"The Home, Koustas stressed,
would be available to al Ahepans
and Daughters of Penelope in the
11 Western States aged 55 years
or older. If someone in the East or
Midwest would like to relocate to
the sunny west coast, they too,
would be welcomed."
Possible sites for the home, according to Koustas, would be in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, Orange County or North San Diego County -- all conducive to retired people. Koustas further stated the Home would be built with HUD money requiring a deposit of 425,000 which would be returned to Ahepa Chapter 152 upon completion of the Home. For further information, write to Peter Koustas, 23222 Aetna St. Woodland Hills, CA 91367 or call at 818-884-5538 after 7:00 PM PST Arizona Chapter 275, Tucson, announces the 1st Annual 2004 Summer Olympics Essay Contest to the Tucson Unified School District High School students. At a recent Board of Governors meeting President James Anthros suggested that the Chapter do something that would give the Chapter some community exposure as well as highlight the Athens Olympics. District treasurer and Past President Nicolas Adamakis Sr. suggested that we establish an association with the local high schools and give several awards during their graduation ceremonies for scholastic excellence. Vice-President Professor John Liontas, who teaches Greek at the University of Arizona and currently completing work towards his Ph.D., suggested that we sponsor an Essay Contest. All of the Tucson area High
School advisors received a letter
and guidelines.
In light of the fact that Greece
has been awarded the honor to
be the host to the 2004 Summer
Olympic Games, The American
Hellenic Educational
Progressive Association
(AHEPA) Arizona Chapter No.
275, has invited all high school
senior students to enter the 1st
annual essay contest.

Gus Frangos led in lauding Kokenes of his "long and dedicated service to Ahepa" as his fellow Brothers joined in singing "Happy Birthday" Kokenes is also a parishioner at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Los Angeles, CA. Cronia Polla Rose Bowl 373 President's open letter: Dear AHEPA Family Members, Greetings and best wishes from
Rose Bowl Chapter 373. The
Pasadena, California Chapter has
had a tremendous quarter with
two great events. October 25,
1997 was the evening or our
annual Halloween Glendi at St.
Anthony's Church cultural center.
The evening began with a
gourmet feast featuring
Chateaubriand and was
complimented by the music of DJ
Takis Papadatos. Brother
Secretary Nikitas Tripodes went
all out again in keeping the
children well rewarded, as all
attending kids received a giant
goodie bag of treats. The evening
culminated with prizes for the
Best Costumes. It was an all time
success as far as attendance, with
220 people attending. Half the net
proceeds benefited St. Anthony's
Church. It was an evening where
everyone came out, and was a
memorable one in keeping with
our chapters tradition.
Many of us have worked together
for many years to further our
causes and to preserve the
Hellenic culture in America. This
work never ends and never
should, as we deal with the
evolution of life and society and
our place in it. With this spirit of
camaraderie, on December 20,
1997 the Pasadena Rose Bowl
AHEPA Family and Chapter
Oinoe of the Pan-Icarian
Brotherhood shared their annual
Christmas party. Held at the
Coco's Banquet room in Arcadia,
California, the Christmas party
was very well attended and
featured a complete buffet dinner
including: prime rib, fresh salmon
filet, and honey dijon chicken.
The party was notable for a
wonderful mixture of our two
Hellenic organizations. Special
thanks to Icarian President Nikitas
Tripodes for sharing the evening
with our Ahepa Family.
On February 28, 1998, past
District Governor Anthony
Horaites chaired the 31st annual
Pentahiliariko for St. Anthony's
Greek Church in Pasadena, CA.
The event is a premier fundraiser
for the Church, and one that has
always been strongly supported by
the Community and Ahepans at
large. The black-tie affair
culminated with the $5,000
drawing and a spectacular event
for all who attended. It featured
abundant appetizers, gourmet
dinner, and the Orchestra music of
Chris Davis. The event was held
at the Pasadena Hilton.
On March 3rd we hosted a joint
District Lodge visitation with the
Downey #430 and Golden West
#466 Chapters which was well
attended. On March 21st we
hosted the annual Ahepa Day at
the Races at Santa Anita Horse
Racing Park.
Fraternally, Steve Tripodes Steve Tripodes, Pres Rose Bowl Chapter 373
gets Proclamation from City of Tucson Mayor George Miller who proclaimed March 25th Greek Independence Day in Tucson. Over 100 members of Ahepa, the St. Demetrios Greek Church Community and students from he Hellenic Students Society of the University of Arizona were in attendance at the City Hall patio where the Mayor read the Proclamation. Father Anthony Moschonas, (a proud Brother Ahepan) began the ceremony with a prayer and spoke briefly about the brave Greek freedom fighters who gave their lives for our freedom. Greek Flag raising ceremony Ahepa Pres. James Anthros, Parish Council Vice-Pres James Gekas and Hellenic Student Society Pres. Christos Theodosiou lead everyone with the singing of
the American National Anthem
and then the Greek National
Anthem while the glorious Blue
and White Greek Flag was raised
and flew all day long at City Hall
next to the Stars and Stripes and
the Arizona State flag.
Also, in a very solemn ceremony,
several Hellenic Student Society
girls dressed in traditional ethnic
customs presented and laid a
wreath in memory of the brave
departed freedom fighters of
1821.
Finally, Professor John Liontas
from the Univ. of Arizona gave a
brief speech about the struggle the
Greeks faced in removing the
Ottoman Turks from Greece.
TUCSON Convention June 25-28, 1998 Since 1931 Tucson has been fortunate to have a great AHEPA presence. Many great men have worked tirelessly and for countless hours to maintain the Hellenic Culture and Heritage. This was all done during a time when Greeks and many foreigners were discriminated against and considered a threat to the economic future of the Anglo Americans. Nevertheless most Greeks stood steadfast and helped build a beautiful complex in the Arizona Sonora Desert Southwest. Today we are the proud receivers of an inheritance the likes of which few have to enjoy. I'll for go the Church-Community Center-Sunday School building etc. I will focus on the Tucson Arizona Ahepa No. 275 Lodge and Temple facility. Since the early 1950' when Ahepa
purchased the present site to
locate the church a small portion
was set aside for future expansion
and building of the Ahepa Meeting
Lodge room. This was finally
accomplished in the early 1970's
when many of the Brothers got
together , before work, after work,
weekends and any spare hour
available to help build a dream.
This dream resulted with a great
open lounge and recreation room
with kitchen, bathroom and an
official ceremonial/ritualistic
temple meeting room for AHEPA.
For many years this room served
to grow and expand the
membership and offered the
community a excellent location for
holding meetings, dinners, social
gathering, parties, district lodge
visitations as well as a place for
the youth to gather for their
meetings and small functions.
During the early 1990's after
hosting several successful Greek
Festivals and generating
substantial profits, the Brothers
decided it was time to upgrade
and remodel the facilities to what
we have today. The old Ahepa
room has been converted into a
Community Multi-Purpose activity
room with a large 52" big screen
TV. The recreation room remains
with poker/game table, and second
TV which is wired with the Greek
TV station ANT 1. The kitchen and
bath were remodeled and the
Temple Meeting room remains the
same except for new carpeting.
So, Please join us during our OPEN HOUSE weekend June 25-28, 1998. POWER and paying delegates
to attend and vote is now a
shameless part of ancient
Ahepa history. Political
factions exists only in the
minds of few members,
fortunately.
Today's AHEPA belongs to
those who believe in unity
and are of common purpose
and mind to protect,
promote and preserve
Hellenism in the United
States.
Yes, Today's AHEPA
continues to belong to the
many older Brothers who
worked so very hard to
build Ahepa, but it also
belongs to the current men
and to the young men coming
of age, who feel that AHEPA
can be a major force and
voice for Hellenism in
today's multi-cultural
society. Today's Brother
AHEPANS want to accomplish
goals not play games and
politics as in the past.
Just look around you, that
is a BIG turn-off to Today's
AHEPANS. That is why we
loose members instead of
gaining members.
To All SENIOR BROTHERS: You
have the experience
knowledge and wisdom that
is GREECE. YOU must get
involved, participate,
organize and help the
younger 2nd and 3rd
generation Hellenic-American Men, Young Adults,
Youth and Children to learn
about their very rich and
special heritage and
culture. AHEPAS original
goal to assimilate and
Americanize the immigrants
was very successful.In fact
some say;"too successful."
We ALL know of 5-10 GREEKS
who refuse to acknowledge
or even deny being Greek.
There was a time in this
country when it was not
popular to be ethnic. We
shortened our beautiful
long and descriptive names,
we lost our accents and we
would say that our olive
skin is just a tan. Well
thank GOD that's all over
with. That part of American
History can be left to the
history books.
Today ethnic pride is great!! Greek flags are displayed in offices, cars, windows, t-shirts, hats, and much more. Greek Glendi's, Festival's, Cultural Exhibits, Art Shows, Concerts, Radio and TV programs with specific Greek themes abound. Many are going back to their Greek names: Chris= Christos; John=Yiannis; Bill=Vasilis;
George=Yiorgos; Tom=Thanasis; Tony=Antonis; Nick=Nikos and
the like.
March 25th and October 28th
celebrations are becoming much more public
with proclamations being
issued from the White House
to small town Mayors'
offices from coast to
coast.
So Why do you want to be a Convention Delegate? OR even better yet, Why are you an AHEPAN??
Those of you who agree and
see the future and look
forward to working towards
these goals, BRAVO,
continue to good work.
Please understand that your
hard work does NOT go un-noticed. People appreciate
the countless hours and
hard work the few put in.
They just don't show their
appreciation as often as
they should.
But, nevertheless, your
accomplishments are what is
important in the end
anyway. Did you do the best
you could have? Did you
participate and work
towards the common goal.
Those Brothers who have for
one reason or another left
the order or stepped back
to observe, they are the
Brothers I am speaking to
and the ones which the
individual chapter leaders
should work with within
their communities to bring
back and join in on the
fun. Politics are DEAD.
AHEPA is a fun group of
Brothers who all work
together, not against each
other. We must fight the
fight that needs fighting.
Fight against those forces
outside who would like to
see the GREEKS put back
down. Fight the fight to
protect our Mother Country
GREECE from being invaded
by foreign powers in the
region.
Fight the fight with
Congress to support GREECE
and the find a solution to
free our brothers in Cyprus
Now that's a fight that if
the millions of GREEKS in
this country got together
to fight we would win!!
So let's start at the
District Convention and get
involved. Let's grow your
local chapter with the
knowledge and support that
the entire District is
behind you. Each chapter
should bring 6 Delegates
and some Alternates just to
begin to process of getting
involved and becoming
educated with the issues.
CONVENTION DELEGATES! GET INVOLVED WITH THE AHEPA COMMITTEES!
These are the major
committees that are created
during the Convention. This
is the forum available for
all delegates to join in
and participate to help
shape the AHEPA for the
future. This is the
beginning point. This is
were what you have to say
in the Chapter is heard
during the Convention. This
is were you tell your
delegates to come attend
the committee meetings and
voice the concerns and
issues which affect your
chapter. This is the time
to bring forward your
chapters ideas for the
future of AHEPA. These
meeting can be very
productive and with
everyone's participation
and involvement can produce
wonderful and positive
results which will help
better our fraternity and
organization.

Since going online AHEPA HQ has established the "AHEPA Congressional Report Card" which grades all 540 senators & representatives on their Greek-American issues performance. This information is available on the Internet at: www.AHEPA.org/report card and is quickly becoming a powerful and precedent setting lobbying tool. "The report card contains a great deal
